Things to Do in Downtown Spartanburg

Spartanburg, a medium size city in the Upcountry of South Carolina, offers a number of things to do in its downtown. Morgan Square is the centerpiece of the downtown area. It was reconstructed in 2005 and today contains a lovely fountain, a large clock tower, wide sidewalks, and new trees and plantings. It is a popular gathering spot to enjoy concerts and festivals. Music on Main concerts are offered throughout the summer and Jazz on the Square concerts are scheduled in the spring and fall. The popular Spartanburg Spring Fling festival fills the downtown area with vendors and entertainment. A Creative Taste of Spartanburg brings out large crowds to sample cuisine from some of Spartanburg’s finest restaurants.

The Chapman Cultural Center in downtown Spartanburg is a wonderful place to experience the performing and visual arts, science, and history. It is owned and operated by The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg and is located at 200 E. St. John Street. The complex consists of three buildings on a five acre campus. Visitors can enjoy the galleries, watch a play, attend the ballet, and peruse the exhibits in the Regional History Museum or the Spartanburg Science Center. The Regional History Museum offers downtown walking tours twice a month. Guides relate humorous and fascinating stories about Spartanburg while leading participants through the historic downtown area.

Wofford College is located just a few blocks north of Spartanburg’s central business district. The college’s Roger Milliken Arboretum, with over 150 acres of trees, is a green oasis in an urban setting. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the beautiful shaded grounds on the historic campus. The nearby Hatcher Public Botanical Garden and Woodland Preserve is another great place to enjoy a nature walk.

Spartanburg’s downtown offers a variety of shopping in its unique specialty stores. There are also a number of art galleries. Art Walk, held on the third Thursday of each month, provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to browse the galleries and enjoy the local art scene.
